MMA Classes in Northwest Las Vegas

Striking and no gi grappling, taught by a black belt, open to complete beginners

Kids and adults · Wednesday 6:00 to 7:00pm, and Saturday from 9:00am (adults)

Two adults drilling no gi grip fighting during the MMA class at Fight For Us Jiu Jitsu

MMA runs twice a week here: Wednesday from 6:00 to 7:00pm, which is open to both kids and adults, and Saturday from 9:00am for adults. The class is striking and no gi grappling, which is the honest description of what mixed martial arts actually is: the standing game and the ground game trained as one thing rather than two hobbies. Greg Kalteich teaches it, with other coaches helping on the mat. Greg is a third degree Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt under Robert Drysdale, so the grappling half of this class is taught by someone with two decades in it rather than by whoever was available. You do not need experience to start. The class is genuinely beginner friendly, and most people who walk in have never thrown a punch or shot a takedown in their lives.

What the class covers

  • Wednesday 6:00 to 7:00pm, kids and adults; Saturday from 9:00am, adults
  • Striking and no gi grappling trained together, not as separate classes
  • Taught by Greg Kalteich, third degree black belt under Robert Drysdale, with assistant coaches
  • Beginner friendly: no experience needed and no fight background assumed
  • Controlled drilling, with intensity matched to the people in front of you
  • Both of your two free classes can be used on MMA if that is what you came for
  • The same mat, the same coaching standard and the same room as our Jiu Jitsu program

Best for: Anyone in northwest Las Vegas who wants striking and grappling in one class: adults starting from zero, people who have trained one side of the sport and want the other, and kids whose families want them in the Wednesday session.

MMA runs at our academy in the Rio Vista Shopping Center on W Ann Road, drawing members from Centennial Hills, Skye Canyon, Providence and the rest of northwest Las Vegas. See the full weekly schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need any experience to start MMA?

No. The class is beginner friendly and that is not a marketing line: most people arrive having never trained striking or grappling at all. You will be shown the movement, you will drill it with a partner at a pace you can handle, and nobody is going to throw you into hard sparring on night one. If you have trained one half of the sport before, boxing but no grappling or Jiu Jitsu but no striking, that is a very common starting point here too.

Who teaches the MMA class?

Greg Kalteich, the owner and head instructor, teaches it, with other coaches helping on the mat. Greg is a third degree Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt under Robert Drysdale and has been training and teaching in Las Vegas for years. The practical upshot is that the grappling in this class is taught to the same standard as our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program, by the same person.

Is the Wednesday MMA class for kids or adults?

Both. Wednesday from 6:00 to 7:00pm is open to kids and adults. The Saturday 9:00am session is an adult class. If you are bringing a child, call us on (702) 483-4207 first and we will tell you honestly whether the Wednesday class is a fit for your child in particular, because that depends on age, size and temperament more than on any rule we could print here.

What should I wear and bring to my first MMA class?

Wear a fitted t-shirt or rash guard rather than a loose shirt, so fingers and toes do not get caught in it, and athletic or board shorts with no pockets, zips or metal buttons. Take off rings, watches, earrings and necklaces before you step on the mat. You train barefoot, so bring sandals or flip flops for walking off the mat. In your bag: a water bottle, a mouthguard, and a small towel. If you already own MMA gloves, hand wraps or shin guards, bring them; if you do not, call the gym before your first class and ask what is available to borrow rather than buying gear for a class you have not tried yet.

Are my two free classes good for MMA?

Yes. The two free classes cover MMA the same way they cover Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Book ahead by form or by phone so we know you are coming and which session you want, use both classes within seven days of the first one, and no more than one class a day. No contract, no deposit and no obligation at the end of it.

How is this different from the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class?

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu here is trained in the gi and contains no striking at all: it is the grappling art on its own, which is why we recommend it for kids and for anyone whose interest is self defense or the sport itself. MMA adds striking and trains the grappling without the gi. If you are not sure which you want, come try both. They are taught in the same room by the same coaching staff, and plenty of members train both.
