Open mat runs Saturday mornings from 10:00am for both kids and adults. There is no formal curriculum and no instructor walking you through a technique of the day. It is unstructured training time: drill the thing you keep getting caught in, roll with people you do not usually get during the week, ask the higher belts the question you did not want to raise in the middle of class. For most people this is where the week's instruction actually turns into skill, because you finally get to test it without a clock and a lesson plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I come to open mat if I train somewhere else?

Yes. Visiting grapplers are welcome, and Jiu Jitsu has a long tradition of cross training on open mats. Message us or call ahead so we know to expect you, bring your gi, and observe the usual etiquette: clean uniform, trimmed nails, respect the room and the people in it, and check your ego at the door. If you are in Las Vegas for a weekend and want somewhere to roll on a Saturday morning, come train.

Can beginners come to open mat?

Absolutely, and you should. Open mat is not an advanced only session. Bring the position you keep getting stuck in from the week's classes and work it slowly with a partner. Higher belts at open mat are generally happy to answer questions and walk you through a problem, and there is more time to do that here than in the middle of a structured class.

Do kids train at open mat too?

Yes, Saturday open mat is for kids and adults both. It is a good session for families, because a parent and child can be on the mat at the same time in a relaxed setting rather than in separate weekday classes. Kids are still supervised and matched sensibly by age and size.
